Teaching Assistants are essential to the success of course delivery in the Queen’s School of Computing. TAs support students, assist instructors, help deliver labs and tutorials, provide feedback, and contribute significantly to the learning experience across our programs. We appreciate the time, skill, care, and professionalism that TAs bring to their work each term.
These pages are intended to help applicants and new TAs understand the TA hiring, onboarding, TA agreement, employment contract, payroll, training, pay rates, and course assignment process.
Start Here: Required Steps and Key Reminders
If you have been offered a TA position, please complete the following steps before beginning TA work:
- Connect with your course instructor to confirm that you are able to accept the TA assignment and meet the expectations of the role.
- Review and accept your TA agreement in the TA system.
Your TA agreement and employment contract are not the same thing. You must accept your TA agreement before your employment contract can be issued. - If you are an international TA, provide your SIN and study permit if requested.
This information is required before your employment contract can be issued if it is not already in the system. If your SIN or study permit expires during the term, you may be asked to provide your renewed SIN and/or renewed study permit once available. - Watch for your employment contract email.
Before accepting/e-signing your employment contract, take a screenshot or save a copy for your records. Contracts are not viewable after they have been accepted. - Accept/e-sign your employment contract by the 15th of the month whenever possible.
Contracts should be accepted by the 15th to meet payroll deadlines for payment at the end of that month. - Do not begin TA work until both your TA agreement and employment contract have been completed and accepted.
- Activate your employee NetID once available.
Your employee NetID will not be available immediately after you accept/e-sign your contract. There is often a systems delay, so please wait and try again later if it is not available right away. Your employee number is the same as your student number. - Complete payroll setup.
This may include direct deposit and, for new Queen’s employees, income tax forms. TA pay is issued on the last business day of the month. - Send your employee NetID to your course instructor so they can add you to the course in OnQ.
- If you are new to TAing with the School of Computing, send your employee NetID to the School so you can be added to the QSC TA training in OnQ.
- Complete required training.
New Computing TAs must complete QSC TA training. TAs must also complete legislated training unless already completed with Queen’s University. You can check your legislated training record through the Queen’s training portal. - Submit proof of legislated training completion, if applicable.
Send the School a screenshot showing the date of completion so that compensation can be processed.
